DBpedia is a valuable resource for Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAMs) looking to extract metadata from the Wikimedia Commons.
Although the Wikimedia Commons will be used for all the examples used here, similar queries are possible against Wikipedia in any of its many supported languages. Visit http://mappings.dbpedia.org/server/ to browse through all the data available.
FAQ
What does DBpedia know about a particular page?
The easiest way to answer this question is to go to http://mappings.dbpedia.org/server/extraction/commons/ and enter the name of the article. For example, entering ``File:The_landing_at_Empress_Augusta_Bay,_Bougainville.jpg`` will provide you with everything DBpedia knows about file.
Why isn't a particular template being extracted?
- At the moment, nested templates are not processed. This is being fixed in https://github.com/dbpedia/extraction-framework/issues/341
- Maybe the tempalte is redirected. See Mapping Guide#Check redirects for your infobox
