DBpedia is a valuable resource for Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAMs) looking to extract metadata from the Wikimedia Commons.

Although the Wikimedia Commons will be used for all the examples used here, similar queries are possible against Wikipedia in any of its many supported languages. Visit http://mappings.dbpedia.org/server/ to browse through all the data available.
